What are impact windows and doors?

Impact windows and doors are the glass itself, engineered to survive a storm. Two panes are bonded to a tough interlayer, so when something strikes the glass it may crack but the pane holds in the frame instead of blowing into the room. The whole unit — glass, frame and anchoring — is tested and rated as a system. There is no separate shutter: the protection is built into the opening permanently.

The big advantage: nothing to close

With shutters, protection depends on someone being there to deploy them. Impact glass removes that step entirely. When a storm forms while you are travelling, at work, or off-island, the house is already protected. There are no panels to bolt on, no motors to worry about, no manual override to remember during a power cut — the openings are simply rated all the time.

• Sliding glass doors. The big sea-view slider is usually the largest single opening in the house. Rated impact sliders protect it without a bulky shutter box over the view — or pair a standard slider with a roll-down if replacement is not on the table.

Every door is measured on-site and ordered as a complete tested unit — glass, frame, hinges and hardware — because a rated pane in an unrated frame protects nothing.

What do impact windows cost in Nassau?

Both reach a rated standard; the difference is how you live with them.

• Choose impact glass if you want zero deployment, are frequently off-island, or value the daily noise, UV and security benefits — and you are open to replacing the window units.
• Choose shutters if you want to protect existing windows at lower cost per opening, want adjustable daytime shade, or are protecting large sliders best covered by roll-downs or accordions and panels.
