What are impact windows and doors?

Impact windows and doors are the glass itself, engineered to survive a storm. Two panes are bonded to a tough interlayer, so when something strikes the glass it may crack but the pane holds in the frame instead of blowing into the room. The whole unit — glass, frame and anchoring — is tested and rated as a system. There is no separate shutter: the protection is built into the opening permanently.

The big advantage: nothing to close

With shutters, protection depends on someone being there to deploy them. Impact glass removes that step entirely. When a storm forms while you are travelling, at work, or off-island, the house is already protected. There are no panels to bolt on, no motors to worry about, no manual override to remember during a power cut — the openings are simply rated all the time.

Ideal for off-island and second-home owners

Much of western New Providence — Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay, Albany — is second homes that sit empty for months. For those owners, impact windows are often the cleanest answer. The home does not depend on a caretaker reaching it before a storm, and there is no annual routine of closing and re-opening shutters. You get rated protection that works whether or not anyone is on the island, with the documentation your insurer wants on file.

  • Protection is permanent — no deployment before a storm
  • Laminated glass in tested, rated frames with proper anchoring
  • Marine-grade frames and stainless hardware for coastal salt air
  • Documentation provided for your Bahamian insurer

Quieter, cooler and more secure every day

Impact glass pays back beyond storm season. The laminated construction cuts outside noise noticeably — welcome near Cable Beach, the airport flight path or a busy road. It blocks the majority of UV, protecting floors and furnishings from the strong island sun, and it helps with cooling load. And because the glass resists impact, it is far harder to break through, adding real security to a home that stands empty.

Hurricane doors: entry, French and sliding glass

Doors fail in storms more often than windows — they are bigger, they flex, and the moment a door goes, wind pressurises the whole house and starts working on the roof. Rated impact doors close that gap, and we install all three common types in Nassau:

  • Entry doors. Impact-rated fibreglass or aluminium entry doors with reinforced frames and multi-point locking — storm protection and everyday security in one unit.
  • French doors. The classic weak point of colonial and estate homes. Impact French doors keep the divided-light look while the laminated glass and rated frame do the structural work. By far our most requested impact door.
  • Sliding glass doors. The big sea-view slider is usually the largest single opening in the house. Rated impact sliders protect it without a bulky shutter box over the view — or pair a standard slider with a roll-down if replacement is not on the table.

Every door is measured on-site and ordered as a complete tested unit — glass, frame, hinges and hardware — because a rated pane in an unrated frame protects nothing.

Supplied and installed in Nassau — not shipped to a dock

If you have been searching for an impact window dealer in Nassau, the distinction that matters is what happens after the sale. Florida exporters will sell you rated units and deliver them to the dock — customs, measurement mistakes, installation and any warranty claim are then your problem, handled from another country. We work as supplier and installer on one contract: on-site measurement, import handling, certified installation and an on-island warranty, with the product rating documentation your insurer needs included at handover.

What do impact windows cost in Nassau?

Like shutters, impact products are priced per opening — a bathroom window and a twelve-foot slider are different jobs. Impact glass runs higher per opening than shuttering the same opening, which is why many homes phase the work: impact glass on the most exposed and most-used openings first, shutters elsewhere, upgrading over time. The measurement visit is free, and the quote prices every opening separately so you can decide opening by opening.

Impact windows vs shutters: which is right?

Both reach a rated standard; the difference is how you live with them.

  • Choose impact glass if you want zero deployment, are frequently off-island, or value the daily noise, UV and security benefits — and you are open to replacing the window units.
  • Choose shutters if you want to protect existing windows at lower cost per opening, want adjustable daytime shade, or are protecting large sliders best covered by roll-downs or accordions and panels.

Many homes end up with a blend — impact glass on the main house and shutters on the garage and outbuildings, or Bahama shutters for character on the front. We install rated products either way and provide the insurance documentation. Book January to May, before season supply tightens.

Frequently asked questions

Do impact windows eliminate the need for shutters?

On the openings where they are installed, yes — the rated protection is built into the glass and frame, so there is nothing to close before a storm. Many owners still keep shutters on garages, outbuildings or oversized sliders where glass replacement is less practical, and mix the two approaches across the property.

Can I get hurricane-rated French doors in Nassau?

Yes. French doors are one of the most requested impact products we install — they are traditionally the weakest opening on a colonial-style home, and laminated impact French doors close that gap without changing the look. Rated sliding glass doors and entry doors are available the same way, all tested as complete units: glass, frame and hardware together.

Are you a window dealer or an installer?

Both, on one contract. We supply the rated windows and doors, handle the import to Nassau, measure every opening on-site, install, and stand behind the warranty on-island. You are not buying a crate at the dock from an overseas dealer and then hunting for someone to fit it.

How much do impact windows and doors cost?

Pricing is per opening, because every window and door is a different size and frame spec. Impact glass costs more per opening than shuttering the same opening — but it works every day (noise, UV, security, cooling) and needs no deployment. Measurement is free and the written quote itemises each opening, so you can phase the work or mix impact glass with shutters.

How long does installation take?

Measurement takes a single visit. Made-to-measure units are then manufactured and shipped to Nassau — typically a matter of weeks — and installation itself runs a few days for a typical home. The practical advice: start before hurricane season, because manufacturing slots and shipping space tighten from June onward.
