What are plantation shutters?
Plantation shutters are interior window shutters: framed panels of wide, tiltable louvers, fitted inside the room against the glass. Tilt the louvers and you go from full light to full privacy without touching a curtain; open the panels and the whole window is clear. They are a permanent piece of joinery, made to the exact size of each opening, and they suit the colonial architecture of Nassau better than almost any other window treatment.
One thing we say plainly, because we are a hurricane protection company first: plantation shutters are decorative and functional interior woodwork — they are not storm protection. Wood or composite? Choosing for island humidity
The material question matters more in the Bahamas than almost anywhere else, because humidity and salt air punish the wrong choice.
- Hardwood. The classic. Lighter panels, fine stained finishes, and the warmth only real timber has. Best in rooms that are consistently air-conditioned, where humidity stays controlled.
- PVC composite. The practical island choice. It does not swell, warp or peel in humidity, shrugs off salt air, and wipes clean — right for kitchens, bathrooms, and homes that live with the windows open. Painted, it is hard to tell from wood.

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Plantation shutters are interior joinery — louvered panels inside the glass for light, airflow and looks. They provide no storm protection. Many of our clients pair the two: rated protection on the outside of the opening and plantation shutters on the inside. The two products never conflict, because one lives outside the glass and the other inside it.
Wood or PVC composite for a coastal home?
In consistently air-conditioned rooms, painted or stained hardwood is beautiful and stable. In kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and anywhere that lives with open windows and salt air, composite is the honest recommendation — it does not swell, warp or peel in island humidity, and from across the room a painted composite louver is indistinguishable from a painted wooden one.
How long do custom plantation shutters take?
Measurement is a single visit. The shutters are then made to your exact openings and shipped to Nassau — typically several weeks — and installation is usually done in a day for most homes. Unlike storm products, there is no seasonal rush, so lead times stay fairly steady year-round.
How is the price calculated?
Per opening, like everything we install. The price of each opening depends on its size, the material (wood costs more than composite), the finish, and details like hidden tilt rods or special shapes. Measurement is free and the written quote prices every opening separately, so you can do the main rooms first and add others later.
Can you make plantation shutters for doors and sliding doors?
Yes. Full-height panels for French and patio doors are a standard part of the range, and bypass or bi-fold track systems cover sliding doors and wide openings. Door panels are made with cut-outs for handles where needed, and everything is measured on-site so the panels clear the hardware properly.
